water pipe burst in house what to do??

This afternoon there was a sudden burst pipe in the house, the water flowed so fast that the whole kitchen and living room were flooded. I turned off the main water valve at the first opportunity, but the water has seeped into the downstairs neighbor's house and they are now very upset.

I have contacted the property and they said they need to wait until tomorrow to send someone to have a look. I have also tried to contact some repairers but due to the lateness of the hour, no one has been able to come immediately. Knowing.

I am very anxious now and don't know what to do next:

How can I deal with the floor and walls that have seeped water as soon as possible to prevent mold and mildew?

How do I communicate with my downstairs neighbors to minimize their damage and dissatisfaction?

Do I need to contact my insurance company and will insurance cover this situation?

Are there any recommended emergency repair services that can come to my home at night?

I live in Phoenix, USA and this situation really has me at my wits end. I hope those who have experience with this can offer some advice, thanks a million!

Is a burst water pipe an emergency?
If you think you have a leak like a burst pipe, you'll need to do something immediately, find your home's stopcock and shut it off. If you cannot isolate the leak, you will have no running water and you will certainly have no hot water, which will be considered a plumbing emergency.

– If your water service has been shut off and recently restored, your pipes need to be flushed for 30 minutes to ensure your safety. Water sitting stagnant in pipes may contain lead, copper and other sediments that are not safe for drinking and cooking.

Can you fix a burst pipe on your own?
If the leak is in a joint or fitting, you may be able to replace the damaged portions. However, if the pipe is damaged, you must remove it and replace it with a new pipe. Once you have mended the leak, you must turn the water back on and check for other leaks.

Turn off your heating, open all your taps to drain the system quickly. Soak up any escaping water with towels. Check with your home insurance company to see if you're covered for leaks and bursts or call a plumber. If there is any water near your electrics, be sure to switch them off at the mains.

Why do pipes burst in a house?
Bursting often happens when pipes are not installed according to code or when they are not properly maintained. If there are cracks or gaps along the piping system, water may seep through, causing the pipes to rust and wear out. Cracks in the pipes can also cause them to rupture

Is a burst pipe easy to fix?
If you're able to locate the leak, you'll need some pipe cutters, a repair kit, pliers, solder, an adjustable pipe wrench, and some know-how. Some quick and easy fixes include: Epoxy putty to temporarily stop leaks. Fibreglass tape and polyurethane resin for a more durable patch-up job (can combine with epoxy putty).

What causes a water main to burst?
Causes of Water Main Breaks

Temperature changes or overly dry or wet weather can cause the ground to shift. This results in breaks to the water main pipes. The age of the main or sudden fluctuations in the pressure may also cause a break. Older pipes may break due to corrosion.

1. Shut Off the Water Supply
Immediately locate and turn off your home's main water valve to stop the flow of water. This valve is typically found in the basement, crawl space, or near the water heater. If the burst pipe is near electrical outlets or appliances, also shut off the electricity to prevent potential hazards. (

2. Drain the Remaining Water
Open all faucets to drain any remaining water from the pipes. This helps relieve pressure in the system and prevents additional leaks.

3. Call a Professional Plumber
Contact a licensed plumber to assess and repair the damaged pipe. Attempting to fix it yourself may lead to further complications.

4. Begin Water Removal
Use towels, mops, or a wet/dry vacuum to remove standing water. Prompt water removal reduces the risk of mold and structural damage.

5. Document the Damage
Take photographs and make a list of all damaged items and areas. This documentation will be essential when filing an insurance claim.

6. Contact Your Insurance Provider
Notify your homeowner's insurance company about the incident. Water damage from burst pipes is typically covered under standard policies. (hanover.com)
